We have arrived at Calvary and it is Good Friday. Jesus has served us all, washed our feet, and invites us to "watch and pray". We are sleepy and filled with fear, aware of our weaknesses and sin. The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. Think of it like this: the very ones Jesus has been with, pouring His life and love into over the last three years are now invited to share in Jesus' most intimate moment of self-donation to the Father. He washes the feet of His followers, institutes the Eucharist, and asks only that these recipients of His Body and Blood, watch and pray with Him in this time of agony. And how is Jesus repaid? We know it all too well, for we also have fallen asleep and have run in fear when we should have stood alongside Jesus. For most of us, it seems almost unrealistic that Jesus would do anything for these pathetic friends, let alone offer His very life to the Father for them. We are invited to see that Jesus not only sacrifices and serves, but he also mediates and advocates for all of us who have hurt and hidden from him. It is the Garden of Eden once again. Our choosing selfishness over self-donation seems to be so engrained in us, yet Jesus is going to demonstrate for all to see, that love is greater than our sin and self-gratification. It is Good Friday because Jesus has not abandoned us, as we abandoned Him. We acknowledge that only God is good, and we run towards this goodness although forever undeserving. It is Good Friday, because the Father loves the Son and accepts His self-donation in the love of the Holy Spirit; we are forever changed. How good to know that Jesus serves us in order to truly save us. We have much to meditate upon in the matter of His goodness.
