“The message which I have come to bring today is destined for all peoples. I come in this time as the Coredemptrix, Mediatrix and Advocate. In one act the Lord gave Mary these three titles, these three thoughts in one act. This new dogma will be much disputed. That is why I have given you the explanation of it.

The time is dawning. Tell the Pope’s Sacrista to inform the Pope. He shall bring him the Lady of All Nations. The Pope shall prepare this dogma and submit it. Say that the time has come. The strict union that exists among the truths of Christian doctrine is known to us all. For Catholic dogmas are born from one another and perfect each other reciprocally. We can see an example of this in the Fathers of the Council of Ephesus. They proclaimed the divine Motherhood of Mary solely on the basis of the Catholic doctrine regarding the hypostatic union of the divine and human natures in the Person of the Word.

Once the relationship between Jesus and his Mother Mary became known, there arose the Catholic belief which holds that the Mother of the Savior was exempt from original sin. Mary, Mediatrix of All Graces

Against the Jansenist heresy the Church taught as a divinely revealed truth that our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ suffered and died for all men without exception. Innocent X, and after him, Alexander VIII and Clement XI, were obliged to inculcate this afresh (Denzinger 1096, 1294, 1382). St John had already stated clearly:

He, in his own person, is the atonement made for our sins, and not only for ours, but for the sins of the whole world. (I John, 2:2)

Also St Paul:

God was in Christ, reconciling the world to himself. (II Cor. 5:19)

It is his (God’s) will that all men should be saved and be led to recognize the truth. (I Tim. 2:4)

Mary, Spiritual Mother and Mediatrix

“What do all the doctrines that God has revealed about the Blessed Virgin have to do with me personally? How do these revealed truths about the Mother of Jesus affect my own spiritual life”?

It is in answer to these questions and to others that we now explore Mary’s God-given role as Spiritual Mother of humanity, under its three aspects of Co-redemptrix, Mediatrix and Advocate. For it is understanding Mary as Spiritual Mother in its fullness that allows for the foundation of an authentic Catholic response to the Mother of Jesus.

By an authentic Catholic response we mean here a response both “from the head” and “from the heart”; both theologically and spiritually; in a phrase, our personal and ecclesial response to Mary. So Mary’s role as Spiritual Mother and Mediatrix can rightly be called the bridge between authentic Marian doctrine and devotion.

Mary, Mediatrix: Exemplar for the Contemporary World

We hold this marian symposium in Fatima, a sacred place where shepherd children communed with the Mother of God, and where the sun careened in the sky, confounding human certainties about what is possible and controllable. St. Augustine reminded us that all creation bears vestiges of the Trinity. Through human history, however, certain persons, places, and events, inexplicably chosen by divine intent, have occasioned deeper understanding of the mysteries of faith. Christ chose simple material things like bread, salt, and breakfast on a Galilean lakeshore to mark the giving of Revelation. In this sacramental place called Fatima, the Mother of God brought together ordinary shepherd tasks and a plummeting sun. In every era of history, there are concrete signs and events that open significant questions and evoke deeper understanding of the Faith.

The theology of mediation in Sacred Scripture has been built on New Testament passages. In the light of this theology, mediators are retrospectively identified in the Old Testament, in moments of special divine power or illumination, as with the prophets.
